The number of laptops shipped in Japan in January increased 2.6 times compared to the same month last year, the highest number ever for January.

This is because the country is planning to deploy personal computers to elementary and junior high school students in order to prepare a learning environment compatible with the new coronavirus.

According to JEITA = Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, which is made by electronics manufacturers, the number of notebook PCs shipped in Japan in January was about 1,277,000, 2.6 times that of the same month last year.

In addition, the shipment value increased 1.3 times to about 70.6 billion yen.

This is the highest number of January since 2008, when we started collecting statistics in its current form.

In order to prepare a learning environment compatible with the new coronavirus, the national plan to deploy personal computers etc. to all elementary and junior high school students nationwide is proceeding ahead of schedule, and sales to individuals used for telework etc. were strong. That's the main reason.

Against the backdrop of the rapid spread of telework, the number of notebook PCs shipped in Japan over the last year has risen to more than 8.94 million, the highest number ever.

On the other hand, industry groups believe that shipments may settle down once the country's deployment to elementary and junior high school students is complete.
