The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution unanimously, declaring the fourth of February the “International Day of Human Fraternity”, as part of an initiative presented by the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The international community will celebrate this day annually, starting in 2021.
Before the resolution was adopted, the state’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, delivered a statement to the United Nations General Assembly to introduce the draft resolution, in which she said: “In recent years, the world has witnessed a significant increase in violence and hate speech against foreigners, religious intolerance, and other forms. Of discrimination.
To counter these transnational threats, we must support initiatives that encourage solidarity and unity among individuals, in a spirit of (human brotherhood).
Accordingly, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Arab Republic of Egypt seek, through this initiative, to celebrate all of our common values of acceptance of the other, openness and compassion, and showing love towards all human beings.
For his part, the Secretary-General of the Human Fraternity Committee, Counselor Mohamed Abdel Salam, affirmed that the United Nations' adoption of February 4 as the International Day of Human Fraternity is a great historical achievement, added to the achievements of the Human Fraternity Committee, and is an international recognition of the historical document of human brotherhood, signed by the Grand Imam Professor Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar, and His Holiness Pope Francis, Pope of the Catholic Church, in Abu Dhabi on the fourth of February of last year.
Abdul Salam added that human fraternity has become the responsibility of the world, and he said: “We thank the UAE, which made use of its multilateral diplomacy through the UAE’s mission to the United Nations to achieve this new achievement in the service of humanity.”
The decision referred to the meeting held between the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar, the Grand Imam, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, and the Pope of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, on February 4, 2019 in Abu Dhabi, which resulted in the signing of the "Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Coexistence."
While the resolution expressed deep concern about acts that incite hatred against religions and undermine the spirit of tolerance, especially as the world is facing an unprecedented crisis resulting from the spread of the "Covid-19" pandemic, the decision also highlights the need for a global response to the pandemic. On unity, solidarity and multilateral cooperation.
The resolution emphasized the valuable contributions of peoples of all religions and beliefs to humanity, and the role of education in promoting tolerance and eliminating discrimination based on religion or belief, and commended all international, regional, national and local initiatives, and the efforts made by religious leaders to promote dialogue between religions and cultures.
The resolution was co-sponsored by 34 member states of the United Nations.
