Yunnan Kunming Xundian Black-necked Crane Provincial Nature Reserve is currently known as the southernmost wintering ground for black-necked cranes. On November 9, 2020, the reserve welcomed the first batch of 4 black-necked cranes in winter.

From 58 in 2018 to 74 in 2019, the number of black-necked cranes that come here to overwinter has steadily increased.

It is reported that the black-necked crane, as a rare bird unique to China, is the only crane among the 15 existing crane species that lives on the plateau for life, and is the "messenger" of a good wetland regional ecosystem.

As of January 12, 2021, the Yunnan Kunming Xundian Black-necked Crane Provincial Nature Reserve has monitored 73 overwintering black-necked cranes in the wetlands.
