Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's second vaccination center opens this morning (9 a.m.).

It is housed in the Erika-Heß-Eisstadion in the Wedding district.

At the start, only one shift is planned that will last until 2 p.m., as the spokeswoman for the vaccination centers, Regina Kneiding, said on Wednesday.

In contrast to what was initially planned, the vaccine from Biontech and Pfizer, which is already being used in the vaccination center in the arena hall in Treptow, is used on the first day.

On Wednesday there were initially concerns as to whether there might have been problems with the cold chain during the transport of the second vaccine from the US manufacturer Moderna, which has now been approved.

The Federal Ministry of Health assured that the quality of the vaccines had not been affected by the transport.

After its own test in the capital, the new vaccine will be used from Friday, said the spokesman for the health administration, Moritz Quiske.

In the vaccination center in the Erika-Heß-Eisstadion, only the Moderna vaccine should be used from Friday.

At the start, 160 vaccinations per day are planned, at a later date up to 1,100 are possible, said Quiske.

The Workers' and Samaritan Association in cooperation with the German Life-Saving Society (DLRG) is responsible for the operation and care of the vaccination center in Wedding.

According to the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Berlin, there are two vaccinators and a medical coordinator on duty per shift until further notice.

The vaccinations in the arena hall in Treptow began on December 27, with a short break at the turn of the year.

The third of a total of six vaccination centers in the capital will be launched on the exhibition grounds - “shortly”, as Kneiding assured.

There are further vaccination centers in Hangar 4 at the former Tempelhof Airport, in the Velodrom in Pankow and in Terminal C at the former Tegel Airport.

It is not yet known when they will start operating.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), there have been more than 35,000 vaccinations in Berlin so far.
