Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - Saxony-Anhalt wants to support the Czech Republic, which has been badly affected by the corona pandemic, and accept Covid patients.
The state government has decided to show solidarity and help, said Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) on Tuesday after a cabinet meeting in Magdeburg.
He had previously been asked by Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) whether Saxony-Anhalt could accept patients.
The situation in the Czech Republic is catastrophic, said Haseloff.
"You can't do it anymore."
How many Czech patients should be admitted initially remained open.
A few hours earlier, the Czech government announced that the intensive care units in their country were on the verge of overload.
The country has never been in such a situation, said Deputy Health Minister Vladimir Cerny.
There are currently more than 6500 Covid patients in Czech clinics, 1300 of them in intensive care.
In Saxony-Anhalt, the number of corona intensive care patients was comparatively high around the turn of the year and the situation in some regions was very tense.
While around 180 intensive care beds were occupied with Covid patients for a long time at the end of December, there are currently 101 according to the Ministry of Health.

Saxony-Anhalt had already taken in and cared for corona patients from there at the beginning of the pandemic in spring 2020 due to the tense situation in France.
