Les Sables-d'Olonne / France (dpa) - circumnavigator Boris Herrmann moved up to second place in the final sprint of the Vendée Globe.

On the penultimate day at sea, the man from Hamburg fired his fans' dreams of victory.

The day before the decision, the French daily Liberation ran the headline: "Herrmann, the final German coup."

“I'm in black and white mode, vacillating between putting myself under pressure and enjoying it,” said Herrmann.

On Tuesday morning he was 85 nautical miles separated from front runner Charlie Dalin from France.

The first boats are expected at the finish in front of Les Sables-d'Olonne on Wednesday evening.

But the sailors have to wait for the official announcement of victory and further placements after the two and a half month race.

Because with Boris Herrmann (“Seaexplorer - Yacht Club de Monaco”), Yannick Bestaven (“Maître Coq IV”) and Jean Le Cam (“Yes We Cam!”), Three skippers were involved in the rescue mission for the shipwrecked Kevin Escoffier Receive time credits on the night of November 30th to December 1st.

Herrmann may deduct 6 hours, the fifth-placed Bestaven 10 hours and 15 minutes, Le Cam 16 hours and 15 minutes.

According to current calculations, there could be a victory duel between Herrmann and Bestaven.

With less than 500 nautical miles, the end of the race becomes more and more of a thriller.
