Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Baden-Württemberg claims to be the first federal state to receive police rabbis.
The Ministry of the Interior announced on Wednesday that they should provide prospective police officers with the necessary knowledge about Jewish life in Germany.
In addition, the police rabbis are available to all police employees and their relatives as confidants and contact persons.
The Ulm rabbi Shneur Trebnik is appointed for Württemberg, and Moshe Flomenmann from Lörrach for the Baden part of the country, according to a spokesman.
They should start their service at the beginning of the new year.
The Ministry of the Interior signed an agreement with the Israelite religious communities in Baden and Württemberg, which is initially valid for two years.
"The police, as the guardian of our free and democratic basic order, must lead by example in the fight against anti-Semitism," said Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU).
"Our police stand for openness and tolerance - and therefore firmly on the ground of the constitution."
Rami Suliman, Chairman of the Israelite Religious Community Baden, said: "I hope that our country will be the model and the pioneer for corresponding agreements in all federal states."
