January 01, 2021 The Open Arms ship rescued 169 people traveling on a wooden boat adrift in international waters on New Year's Eve afternoon.

The mostly Eritrean castaways are 157 men and 12 women.

There are 6 children;

in all, there are 40 minors.



Although Eritrean is the main nationality, there are also people from Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Sudan and Libya.

The rescue took place yesterday afternoon at about 5.45 pm, upon notification of the Alarm Phone, about 80 miles from Lampedusa.

The migrants left on the morning of December 30 last year from Sabratha, Libya, on a wooden boat with a double deck. 



"There is no Christmas or New Year when fleeing violence, which is also a new beginning for them. Let's continue", explained the NGO in a tweet.
