Bochum (dpa / lnw) - A good six years after the end of car production in Bochum, Opel is leaving the company responsible for relocating companies to the former factory site.
The car manufacturer and the city announced on Monday.
Opel kept all its promises, said Opel HR manager Ralph Wangemann according to the announcement.
Opel remains an important employer in Bochum with its goods distribution center.
The city of the Ruhr area and the car manufacturer founded the company “Bochum Perspektive 2022” in 2014, about two years before the last car rolled off the production line in the plant.
New companies have now been found for around 65 percent of the 70 hectare factory site.
The largest new employer on the former factory site is Deutsche Post DHL with a large parcel center.
When the site is fully marketed, at least twice as many people should work there as last time at Opel.
When it closed, the car plant had around 3,400 employees.
Up to 20,000 people worked at Opel in Bochum at the peak of car production.

For the renovation of the factory premises and the search for new companies, Bochum Perspektive originally calculated total expenditure of around 125 million euros.
In the meantime, however, there are cost increases of 30 percent, which would have to be offset by the higher sales prices for the land and more subsidies, the company said.
Bochum Perspektive will apply to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in February for the necessary funds to secure the company's financial resources in the future.
