Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Using solar energy for climate protection: The expansion of photovoltaics in Rhineland-Palatinate is making progress.

As the Green parliamentary group in Mainz announced on Monday, citing the Federal Network Agency, plants with an installed capacity of 2503 megawatts were in operation across the country at the end of 2020.

In 2010, according to the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of the Environment, it was only 830.8 megawatts.

According to the ministry, the number of photovoltaic battery storage systems soared from just 16 in 2010 to 4025 by November 2020.

The red-yellow-green state government aims to cover the electricity supply entirely with renewable energies by 2030.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, the photovoltaic expansion would have to be tripled for this.

Greens parliamentary group leader Bernhard Braun warned: "Too many well-suited areas are not yet being used for photovoltaics."

He called for "the expansion of solar energy on open spaces, contaminated sites, carports and roof areas".

Braun emphasized: "In view of the need for more climate protection, one thing is clear: in the future, new buildings without photovoltaics will only be allowed in exceptional cases."

Recently there was also a solar cadastre in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The online portal is intended to determine the potential for generating solar power for all roof areas.

After entering the address for a building, it should display the roof area suitable for solar systems and the possible power generation in kilowatt hours.
