The alert was given around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

In an apartment in the Gayeulles district in Rennes, the police discovered two men.

One, aged 52, was found dead by firefighters, presumably beaten to death.

In this apartment which bore "very many traces of blood", the police will also discover the author of the call to the fire brigade.

Suspected of being at the origin of the death of his host, the man had been taken into police custody.

This Thursday, he was indicted and jailed for murder and intentional violence while clearly intoxicated.

Aged 49, the suspect had been accommodated for several months by the victim in his apartment on avenue des Gayeulles.

According to the public prosecutor Philippe Astruc, he had already been the author of violence on the night of January 8 to 9.

"The respondent admitted several episodes of violence while he was alcoholic without however admitting homicidal intent."

"Numerous traumatic injuries" on the victim's body

According to the Rennes prosecutor's office, the “reason” for the altercation would be linked to “the victim's lack of support regarding a dispute with a third party”.

After having struck him, the respondent would have tried to revive his friend until the arrival of the firefighters.

"The autopsy of the victim revealed the presence of numerous traumatic injuries," said the prosecution.

Already convicted on several occasions, notably for acts of violence, the man was placed in pre-trial detention.
