Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller has warned against far-reaching easing of the corona measures.

You could destroy everything that has been achieved, he said after a special session of the Senate on Thursday evening.

In the next few weeks, too, it is important to choose a responsible path.

"We are in one of the most difficult phases of this entire fight against the pandemic, perhaps even the most difficult," warned Müller.

Berlin has achieved a lot of positive things.

"We were able to save thousands of lives," said the SPD politician.

"Despite all these successes, we can now see that we are not yet where we should be and where we want to be."

The number of infections stagnated or even rose again.

«On the other hand, we have already had vaccinations.

We see that by vaccinating the very elderly in the nursing homes, we have significantly fewer deaths », said the Governing Mayor.

"It follows that some say: let's just forget the incidences."

Müller warned against such conclusions.

"We see that we are still a long way from over the mountain."

The key is to find the right balance.

"What moves and touches us all is that we notice that people are also reaching their limits emotionally, that a limit has been reached after these months of restrictions."

The decisions of the Senate to extend the lockdown and at the same time allow further easing are therefore correct.

"It's a big step forward," said Müller.
