Wiesbaden / Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - The Left will run nationwide in the local elections in mid-March in Hesse.

The party will lead the election campaign with three main focuses, said a spokesman on Friday.

The Left wants to work for more affordable living space, better bus and train connections in the metropolitan areas and in the countryside, as well as a fairer distribution of the corona costs.

Because of the corona pandemic, the left is relying primarily on digital election campaigns.

The party also wanted to be present on the street with targeted and creative actions, the spokesman announced.

The starting shot of the election campaign will be with the start of the postal vote in early February.

Local elections will take place on March 14th.

The aim is to continue the rising trend of the last vote in 2016.

In the local elections in 2016, the CDU was the strongest force (28.9 percent), just ahead of the SPD (28.5), despite significant losses.

The AfD (11.9) landed in third place ahead of the Greens (11.3).

The FDP came to 6.4 five years ago and the Left / Left List gained 4.5 percent of the vote.

The turnout was 48.0 percent.
