Schwerin / Berlin (dpa / mv) - The Left in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is pushing for a faster pace in reducing climate-damaging greenhouse gases.

Germany achieved its emissions targets only thanks to considerable "protection aid" from the corona pandemic, which severely restricted economic and public life.

"The numbers cannot hide the fact that Germany and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are treading on the spot when it comes to climate protection," said the energy policy spokeswoman for the left-wing parliamentary group in the state parliament, Mignon Schwenke, on Tuesday in Schwerin when the federal data for 2020 was published.

Schwenke emphasized that greenhouse gas emissions in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have only been reduced marginally for 20 years.

As can be seen from the response of the state government to a small inquiry from the left-wing parliamentary group, in 1990 26 million tons of CO2 were emitted in the northeast.

In the course of the closure and renovation of formerly state-owned farms, the annual amount fell to around 19 million tons by 1999.

This value has hardly changed since then.

60 percent of the greenhouse gases in the country are generated during the production of electricity and heat.

Schwenke renewed the demand for a climate protection law for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania "with ambitious goals, binding measures and scientific support".

In total, Germany emitted almost 739 million tons of greenhouse gases in 2020.

Compared to 1990 emissions fell by 40.8 percent.

Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze (SPD) said on Tuesday in Berlin that Germany managed to achieve its climate target last year.

The Climate Alliance Germany called the decrease in emissions a one-off effect of the Corona crisis.

"What we need, however, is an effective climate policy - otherwise emissions will rise again," said managing director Christiane Averbeck.
