Walsrode (dpa / lni) - There is a lot to do in the Walsrode World Bird Park until the planned reopening in around seven weeks: The 4,000 birds from around 650 species have to be weighed, measured and counted.

Andean condor, secretary and parrot were carefully guided onto the scales with the help of the zookeepers on Thursday.

A secretary - a bird of prey native to Africa - has had the prosthesis readjusted to his foot.

"When weighing and measuring the animals, the keepers always make sure to spare the birds any stress," said Janina Ehrhardt, spokeswoman for the park.

Despite the current Corona restrictions, the reopening is planned for March 20.

The zoo has been closed since November 1st.

At the beginning of each year the zoological department updates the lists, data sheets and inventory books.

The inventory, which lasts several weeks, determines how much food has to be bought for this year.

According to the operators, the animals need around 84 tons of food: fish, meat, insects, fruit and vegetables.

The large flocks such as budgies and parrots are counted.

There were offspring among the endangered Humboldt penguins in 2020: two little ones hatched.
