"Always stand at the forefront of serving patients" (telling about one thing in a lifetime)

Zhang Xiaofang: Born in 1920, member of the Communist Party of China, professor of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University.

In 1939, he entered the medical school of Henan University at the time. In the following 70 years of ophthalmology research and clinical practice, he completed dozens of innovations and established a complete set of methods for positioning and extraction of intraocular foreign bodies; Honorary titles such as Outstanding Contribution Expert" and "National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Worker".

The 100-year-old Zhang Xiaofang goes to work every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to the editorial office of the Chinese Journal of Ocular Trauma and Occupational Eye Disease. He sits for consultations every Tuesday and rounds every Thursday-this is his daily schedule.

At a seminar, Zhang Xiaofang declined the suggestion of sitting in his seat and insisted on going to the podium, speaking sonorously...

"At that time we studied hard to study medicine to save the country, not to get a degree for ourselves"

"Review under the rapeseed oil lamp in the evening, and recite in the woods on the mountain in the morning-although the conditions are difficult, everyone is very hard." Recalling the experience of studying 80 years ago, Zhang Xiaofang had a clear mind and said eloquently...

In 1939, Zhang Xiaofang was admitted to the medical school of Henan University at that time.

In view of the situation of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the college moved to a remote mountain area. There was no ready-made school building, and it was too late to start construction, so it had to rent old houses to run the school.

Due to the war, many students do not have any source of income at home, and they only rely on the "loan" issued by the school to subsidize their lives.

Zhang Xiaofang has entered a state of part-work and part-study since he enrolled.

For 6 years, he wrote handouts, painted wall charts, worked as a tutor, and served as a substitute teacher... Zhang Xiaofang would review under the dim light until late every night; he would wake up to study at the first day of the next day.

If you don’t have a notebook, you buy coarse paper from the grocery store and cut it into a small notebook; if you don’t have a pen and ink, you can use the dye that dyes your clothes into ink. Use the tip of a small wooden stick as a pen, and write your homework with dye water.

In this way, Zhang Xiaofang spent a hard university life and laid a solid professional foundation.

"Some scenes are still fresh in my memory. Our generation has experienced war years and understands better that without a prosperous country and a great party, the people can't live a good life..." Zhang Xiaofang said, "At that time we studied hard. It’s for studying medicine to save the country, not for getting a degree."

"The scalpel is very light, but it embodies the hope of the patient and represents the sacredness of medicine."

"When the People's Republic of China was first founded, there were many eye patients in Henan, especially trachoma and its complications and sequelae, which brought inconvenience to the production and life of many people. The call of patients and the needs of the country are our responsibility." Zhang Xiaofang said.

In addition to doing his job diagnosis and treatment, Zhang Xiaofang also took the ophthalmology medical staff to go to rural areas, mines, and schools on holidays to conduct eye disease surveys and trachoma prevention and treatment for local people. He also studied the causes of trachoma, improved the local medication method for trachoma, and simplified The blepharoplasty correction surgery has achieved good results.

"Whether the eyes are healthy affects a person's quality of life and happiness index. As an ophthalmologist, we have to think of ways to treat diseases that endanger the eyes." In 1955, Zhang Xiaofang was determined to overcome the problem of removing foreign bodies in the eye first. More than 50 years of experimental research and clinical practice, he has completed 35 innovations and inventions, and established a complete set of intraocular foreign body location and extraction methods. Among them, thin bone location and square location extraction method are the most praised in the industry.

At the end of the 20th century, cataract was one of the main reasons for blindness in patients with eye diseases in our country.

At that time, the internationally accepted surgical methods were complicated and the results were not satisfactory. Special equipment was required.

Various restrictions make it difficult for many primary hospitals in my country to perform cataract surgery.

"Choose ophthalmology medicine, you can't give up in any case. The weight of the scalpel is very light, but it embodies the hope of the patient, and represents the sacredness of medicine." Zhang Xiaofang consulted domestic and foreign materials, compared various similar operations, and compared foreign A kind of small incision surgery, gradually improved and simplified in practice, forming a simple operation without special equipment support.

This method is not only low cost, but also can control the operation time to 10-15 minutes, the fastest is only 6 minutes, which greatly reduces the pain and economic burden of patients.

For more than 20 years, this "small incision technique for cataract extraction" has been widely used in primary hospitals, and no fewer than 20 million cases of this operation have been performed everywhere.

Zhang Xiaofang helped countless eye disease patients to see the light again throughout his life. In 1991, he was awarded the honorary title of "National Expert with Outstanding Contribution" and in 1997 he was awarded the honorary title of "National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Worker".

Over the past 70 years, he has also trained a large number of clinical ophthalmology talents, successively trained more than 70 masters and doctors in ophthalmology, many of whom have become authorities in the industry and academia.

"His benevolence and love for patients has made the majority of ophthalmological patients gain a lot of warmth and touch. His dedication to the ophthalmology career is worthy of every medical worker to learn and practice." Professor Sun Xinghuai, Chinese Medical Association Ophthalmology Branch Say.

"It doesn't matter if you live less for a few years, I must seize the time to repay the motherland"

After retirement, Zhang Xiaofang, who could have enjoyed his old age, never left the post of serving patients.

"I am getting older now and have less clinical work, so I will share the burden of the young doctor and do a good job in the Chinese Journal of Ocular Trauma and Occupational Eye Disease." Turning over the paper he reviewed, every page is full of meticulous care. The traces of the revision confirm his rigorous attitude towards medicine and his sincere care for patients.

Every time he sits for a consultation, the waiting room is often crowded with patients who come here.

He has no time to drink water and no time to go to the toilet. He stays in the consulting room for a long time, trying his best to diagnose and treat patients.

In order to help as many patients as possible, he also worked overtime as he did when he was young, trying to meet the needs of patients for medical treatment.

"Some patients came from far away and just wait for my diagnosis and treatment. I can't solve the problem for others. I'm sorry for the patient." He said.

In fact, Zhang Xiaofang is a cancer patient who has undergone more than 10 operations.

Before an operation, he knew the risks involved, so he donated the 1.2 million yuan he had accumulated throughout his life to establish an ophthalmology academic fund to fund and reward young doctors.

After the operation, he spent almost every day in outpatient clinics, ward rounds and teaching, and continued to revise his thesis after returning home at night.

Zhang Xiaofang said: "It doesn't matter if you live less for a few years, I must hurry up and repay the motherland."

Last year, on the 100th birthday of Professor Zhang Xiaofang, the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University held the "Seminar on Academic Thoughts for the 75th Anniversary of Professor Zhang Xiaofang's Teaching in Medicine".

Looking back on a hundred years, Zhang Xiaofang said: “Today’s achievements cannot be separated from the party’s guidance and education. Live a day, work a day, serve a day, give a day, and always stand at the forefront of serving patients and always stand for The first line of ophthalmology services."

  Reporter's Notes

  Keep forever

When interviewing Zhang Xiaofang, what impressed me most was his fiery passion and power of struggle.

His students and everyone in the department felt the same.

Everyone said: "When you see him, you have passion, strength, and courage." "Not like a centenarian, like a vigorous young man"...

Where does this power come from?

Only if you don't forget your original intention, can you be good and never move forward.

I think it was the original intention, which extended the length of his life, and allowed him to keep the power of youth forever and keep the attitude of forging ahead.
