Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters upgraded the emergency service to the second stage in preparation for heavy snow at 9 o'clock last night.
The heavyweight script entered the first phase of emergency work from noon yesterday, but the response step was raised as road congestion and vehicle isolation continued due to heavy snowfall.
Seoul and Gyeonggi Province also entered the first and second stages of emergency work, respectively, from yesterday evening.
Last night, Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun ordered the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, the Ministry of Land, Transport and the Ministry of National Defense to take necessary measures by mobilizing all available resources.
Military personnel were also employed in the snow removal work.
More than 200 soldiers from nearby units, including the 8th and 23rd Divisions, are engaged in snow removal work, such as pushing isolated vehicles by being put into the heavy snow damage site.
Schools in Gangwon-do are closed on the first day of the first semester today, or school hours are adjusted.
The Gangwon-do Office of Education said that 66 schools in eight cities and counties, including Goseong, Gangneung, and Sokcho, where heavy snowfall was concentrated, will be closed today.
School hours are adjusted for 26 schools in 7 cities and counties, including Donghae and Hwacheon.
The rest of the schools may decide to close or adjust school hours at the discretion of the principal.
