A week of coma

"Yuriy is better, he starts to wake up, to want to talk to us, to move, and that's a very good sign," said his mother, Nataliya Kruchenyk on Saturday, interviewed by

BFMTV in

front of the Necker hospital.

"Yuriy had his nose, arm, shoulders, ribs and fingers broken. But above all he had his skull broken in several places. He had an operation for more than six hours, he was in a coma more of a week ".

"The prognosis is rather encouraging as he has started to move his arms and hands so he will not be paralyzed," she explained.

"Now we don't know how we are going to find him. Will he remember us, be able to talk, work, play football, like before? Nobody can tell because it is too early".

According to her, her son was with a group of friends after leaving college near the Beaugrenelle shopping center, a business district in the fifteenth arrondissement of Paris, wealthy and reputedly peaceful, when they were "surprised by a bunch of young people arriving from who knows where ".

Witnesses spoke of a brawl between rival gangs, without being able to say whether or not the victim was part of one of them.

His mother found Yuriy "in horrible condition" in the fire engine that came to rescue him.

“It hurts very, very badly when you see your child begging you not to let him die,” she told
