The number of foreign tourists visiting Japan by cruise ship last year decreased by 94% from the previous year due to the influence of the new coronavirus, to only about 126,000.

Due to the government's border measures, international cruise ships have never called in Japan since March last year, and there is no prospect of recovery.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the number of foreign tourists visiting Japan by cruise ship has exceeded 2 million for the third consecutive year from 2017 to the end.

However, last year when the infection of the new coronavirus spread, the number of people was about 126,000, a decrease of 94% from the previous year.

Due to the strengthening of the government's border measures, international cruise ships have never called in Japan since March last year, and there is no prospect of recovery.

It is also a pain for local governments that have positioned the attraction of international cruise ships as a pillar of regional development.

On the other hand, cruise ships around domestic ports have begun to resume operations in response to the fact that industry groups compiled guidelines for preventing the spread of infection in September last year. The declaration of the situation has forced many operators to suspend operations again.
