Ludwighafen (dpa / lrs) - There was a fire in a plant of the chemical company BASF in Ludwigshafen on Wednesday.
At least 150 kilograms of the substance methyldiethanolamine, which is classified as slightly hazardous to water and can cause serious eye irritation, entered the Rhine via cooling water channels, according to a BASF announcement.
In the northern part of the plant, in addition to methyldiethanolamine, the extremely flammable gas oxogas, which is poisonous when inhaled, had leaked.
Subsequently, there was a fire, and smoke was also briefly visible.
According to the information, the fire was under control on Wednesday afternoon.
According to BASF, no increased values were found in the air during measurements.
It is not yet clear how the substances were released.
An employee who was near the exit point had been brought to the factory outpatient clinic as a precaution, it said.
