Erfurt (dpa / th) - Finance Minister Heike Taubert (SPD) supports the proposal that Thuringia provides medical masks for the needy free of charge.

"For me it is important that there is not a great administrative effort," said Taubert on Monday of the German press agency in Erfurt.

She is waiting for a call from Minister of Health Heike Werner (left) to sort it out.

So far there has only been a blanket application from the Ministry of Health for the award of free masks, without giving further details.

Taubert expects a short-term agreement between the two ministries.

Medical masks are to become mandatory in public transport and when shopping in the future.

According to the Ministry of Health, stocks in the country of FFP2 and surgical masks are to be used to distribute them free of charge to those in need.

It did not provide any information on the number of masks to be issued.

Several million masks are said to be in stock in Thuringia, some of which are also needed for the protection of helpers and emergency services.

The SPD parliamentary group had made the proposal last week to distribute free masks to people in need.

In the opinion of Left Party leader Susanne Hennig-Wellsow, they should go to people who receive basic security and who can hardly afford medical masks.

In their opinion, the municipalities should take over the distribution.
