Stockholm (AP) - Former HSV professional Marcus Berg is returning to his Swedish homeland.

After the European Football Championship in the summer, the 34-year-old will switch from the Russian first division club Krasnodar to IFK Göteborg, where he will receive a contract until 2023.

The Swedish club announced on Monday.

The center forward had once signed his first professional contract with the IFK, before he later also stood in the forefront in Hamburg.

"It has always been a dream to come home and play here again," Berg was quoted in a club statement.

In 2007 he became Swedish champions with the club from the second largest city in his country.

At the beginning of March, the Swedish “Aftonbladet” reported, citing informed circles, that national player Berg and Borussia Mönchengladbach's left-back Oscar Wendt would return to Gothenburg in the summer.

This was not officially confirmed at the time.

Both Berg's contract in Krasnodar and that of fan favorite Wendt in Gladbach expire at the end of June.

IFK Göteborg was also Wendt's first professional station.

Gladbach has not yet confirmed a possible change from Wendt.
