Trier (dpa / lrs) - After the rampage in Trier with five dead, the Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Malu Dreyer and the Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe (both SPD) thanked the rescue workers for their work.

Dreyer said on Friday that the shocking act put all helpers under extreme stress.

"Such a traumatic mission can hardly be understood and even more difficult to process."

The state commissioner for victims, Detlef Placzek, offers support to all those affected.

On December 1, a 51-year-old gunman raced through the pedestrian zone in his sports vehicle, killing five people and injuring at least 24 other people, six of them seriously. More than 850 helpers from the police and various aid organizations were then on duty. "You all did a great service in these difficult hours, for those affected, for the city of Trier and for our country," the State Chancellery quoted the two politicians as saying.
