DP World begins operating the multi-purpose terminal at Luanda Port

Today, DP World Group commenced operation of the multi-purpose terminal at the Port of Luanda.

The multi-purpose terminal was handed over to DP World - Luanda by the Port of Luanda, following the signing of a 20-year concession contract last January by the Chairman of Luanda Port, Antonio Pingi, Chairman and CEO of DP World Group, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem. .

The group has appointed Francisco Penzon as Executive Director of DP World - Luanda, who is from Panama and has more than 20 years experience in the port operation and management sector, having worked in the ports sector in Panama, Bahrain, Peru, Georgia, Djibouti and Algeria.

He joined DP World in 2016 to hold the position of Chief Operating Officer of DP World - Djibouti.

In 2018, he was appointed as Director of Operational Excellence in the Middle East and Africa.

Prior to assuming his new position, he was Deputy General Manager at DP World - Algeria.

DP World Luanda is investing $ 190 million to improve the terminal and help Angola achieve its economic growth ambitions and make it a trading center on the western coast of the southern region of Africa.

The terminal is the eighth port facility currently managed and operated by DP World in the Africa and Middle East region.

Improvements are underway at the container terminal with the purchase of new equipment including 30 trucks, six container handling vehicles, four empty container cranes and four forklifts.

New staff facilities will soon be built, and new rubber-tire gantry cranes will be integrated into the terminal equipment, which will be the first of its kind in Angola.

The gantry cranes improve efficiency, are compatible with environmental requirements, and allow better use of the container yard at the terminal.

Binzon expressed his pleasure to lead the team at DP World - Luanda and work in the next phase of the strategic development of the terminal, and by leveraging its expertise, technologies and global capabilities across the supply chain, Dubai Ports will implement its best practices and systems at the terminal.

He said, "The process of integrating local employees in DP World - Luanda has already started, and more training and qualification programs will soon be implemented for them, in addition to building new facilities and installing modern equipment."

For his part, Executive Director and General Manager of the Middle East and Africa at DP World, Suhail Al-Banna, welcomed all of his Angolan colleagues in the DP World team, expressing his happiness for their presence in Angola to continue developing the terminal as a commercial center in the South West Africa region, which will support the goals of The country's economic growth by attracting more investments and increasing trade flow.
