Part of a cliff-top cemetery
in the north-west
Italian region of
Liguria
has collapsed due to a landslide.
Dozens of coffins have ended up in the sea, as confirmed by the fire department.
No person has been involved in these events, according to the same source.
The cemetery is located on the cliff of the coastal municipality of
Camogli
, about twenty kilometers from
Genoa
, and was affected by a landslide that has caused the collapse of one of its areas with columbariums.
In this way the niches sank dozens of meters down to the rocks on the shore and numerous coffins have ended up in the sea.
A team of firefighters has already begun work to secure the place and recover the bodies, which must be identified.
Those in charge of sounding the alarm have been the employees who were restoring some pantheons and who directly attended the collapse of part of the cemetery.
They even recorded the moment with their mobile phones.
The workers narrate in the recordings, broadcast by local media, how the ground began to vibrate and immediately before their very eyes a part of the cemetery began to crack and ended up sinking to the beach.
The Camogli cemetery is one of the most appreciated in the area because of the area in which it is located, in the touristic Italian "riviera" facing the Ligurian sea.
