Berlin (dpa) - According to a study, permanent holiday apartments are increasing rents in the immediate vicinity.

The German Institute for Economic Research Berlin (DIW) announced on Wednesday that the asking rent in the immediate vicinity increases by an average of around 13 cents per square meter for each additional Airbnb accommodation.

Because of the ban on misappropriation in Berlin, rents have fallen somewhat, especially in Neukölln, Mitte and Lichtenberg.

But the ban hardly helps against the housing shortage.

Because only a few apartments are rented out as holiday homes.

For example, less than one percent of all rental apartments are offered on the best-known agency portal Airbnb.

The study also sees advantages from the supply of holiday apartments, such as a higher demand for tourist and cultural offers in the city.

Short-term rentals, for example during vacation, also mean that the available space is used more efficiently.

With the misappropriation ban, the state has been trying to prevent apartments from being withdrawn from the regular rental market since 2014.

The Senate now wants to make it easier for the authorities to find illegal vacation homes.

All providers should not only register, but also be obliged to indicate the registration number in advertisements.

Portals like Airbnb would then no longer accept advertisements without this number.

The Senate decided on the changes on Tuesday, the discussion in the House of Representatives is pending.
