Erfurt (dpa / th) - In the fight against the corona pandemic, the first Thuringians are to be vaccinated against the virus.

At the official start today (10:00 a.m.) in the Greiz district, Thuringia's Minister of Health Heike Werner (left) is expected.

The first around 10,000 vaccine doses arrived in Thuringia on Saturday.

Further deliveries are expected.

The agent is to be used first in old people's and nursing homes to vaccinate old and particularly vulnerable people.

The order in which people are vaccinated is determined by a regulation issued by the Federal Ministry of Health. The reason is that not enough vaccine will be available in the first few weeks. The agent that is to be used in Thuringia from Sunday is the vaccine from the Mainz-based company Biontech and its US partner Pfizer. It has to be cooled to below minus 70 degrees in order to last longer. For a sufficient immunization, two vaccinations are necessary about three weeks apart.
