Construction of the coastal motorway could be twice as expensive

Westerstede (dpa) - The planned construction of the A20 coastal motorway could become massively more expensive according to a study by the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) Lower Saxony.

The costs for the new building project were seriously underestimated in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030, according to the analysis that the association wants to present today (10.30 a.m.) in Hanover together with other opponents of the expansion.

Accordingly, the total costs for the A20 construction could be around twice as expensive as initially planned: Instead of the targeted 3.7 billion euros, the costs according to BUND calculations should be at least 7 billion euros.

The A20 coastal motorway is intended to connect the Netherlands, northern Germany and Poland and, with a length of 121 kilometers on the Lower Saxony side, is one of the country's most important infrastructure projects.

However, the construction is disputed again and again - complaints delayed the start of the first 13-kilometer section in Lower Saxony from the A28 near Westerstede (Ammerland district) to the A29 near Jaderberg.
