Potsdam (dpa / bb) - The corona vaccinations with the preparation from Astrazeneca begin in Brandenburg on Wednesday next week.

Because it is only recommended for under 65-year-olds, people over 80 still cannot get vaccination appointments.

The reason for this is the continued low levels of vaccines from Biontech and Moderna, announced the Ministry of Health in Potsdam on Friday.

As soon as enough vaccine doses are available, there will be appointments again for people over 80.

Citizens whose vaccination appointments in January had to be postponed due to unexpected delivery delays should be given preferential treatment.

You would be contacted by phone.

Around 9,000 appointments were initially canceled.

Protection with the vaccine from Astrazeneca will start next Wednesday (February 17) in the eleven vaccination centers so far, the ministry announced.

This should vaccinate care workers in outpatient and inpatient care for the elderly as well as staff in medical facilities, said Health Minister Ursula Nonnemacher (Greens).

She has great understanding for the demands for a quick vaccination by other vulnerable professional groups such as the police, teachers, educators and fire fighters.

But: "Unfortunately, the necessary vaccine quantities are not yet available in this initial phase."
