  • The Equinix data center in Bordeaux is due for delivery in July.

  • It will host servers that will eventually be able to use 6 MW of electrical power.

  • “Strategically located in the southwest of France, near the Atlantic coast, Bordeaux is asserting itself as a new key digital area,” says the American host.

Code name: BX1.

This mega data center will allow international companies and local communities located in New Aquitaine to connect directly to players in the global economy.

The American host Equinix will build a data center of several megawatts in Bordeaux, which, after Marseille, will be the second metropolis outside Paris to host one of these large server farms.

This new data center will include 3,000 square meters of “clean rooms”, accommodating servers that will eventually be able to use 6 MW of electrical power, according to the American group.

This $ 32 million investment is to be put into operation from July.

The connectivity hub of the new Amitié submarine cable

BX1 will be the connectivity hub for the new Amitié submarine cable.

This new generation telecommunications cable (optical fiber), with a length of 6,800 km, will provide from early 2022 a connection between the State of Massachusetts in the United States, Le Porge on the Gironde coast, and Bude in England. , and will thus create a new European gateway to support data traffic between the United States and Europe.

Three times more powerful than current cables, it must meet the needs of the next 20 years.

"Strategically located in the southwest of France, near the Atlantic coast, Bordeaux is asserting itself as a new key digital area on the global connectivity map," Equinix explains in a press release.

This agglomeration has attracted a high concentration of start-ups, and hosts cutting-edge industries in the aerospace and optical sectors.

It is also home to a thriving community of international and local businesses seeking low latency, better bandwidth, and enhanced connectivity with leading network, content and cloud service providers, in order to to establish and develop their activities.

"Direct and secure connections to a complete digital ecosystem"

“This is the first state-of-the-art computerized data center in the region,” explains Régis Castagné, CEO of Equinix France.

By setting up in Bordeaux, we hope to make Nouvelle-Aquitaine a model of innovation.

Thanks to fiber optic links with our Parisian sites, companies that deploy in BX1 will have direct and secure connections to a complete digital ecosystem.

"

The American host also believes that "the Covid-19 pandemic has revealed the importance of digital technologies: from teleworking to the rise of automation and collaboration, technological innovations have made it possible to comply with the restrictions, but also to seize new opportunities.

"

Until now, Marseille was the only provincial city to host large data centers.

These are managed by a rival of Equinix, the American group Digital Realty / Interxion, which is also attached to a global network of submarine cables.
