Munich (dpa / lby) - Nurses in old people's homes fall ill with the corona virus more often than any other professional group in Bavaria.

11.1 out of every 1000 insured persons working in elderly care were on sick leave due to Covid-19 in the fourth quarter of last year, said the health insurance company Barmer.

Since the health burden of employees in nursing homes is already high, they are on sick leave more often and longer than other occupational groups: With an average of 25.5 days lost, they lead the ranking of occupational groups in Bavaria according to the latest data from 2019.

This emerges from the Barmer Pflege-Report 2020 published on Wednesday, which was submitted to the German Press Agency in advance.

According to the fund's calculations, the long-term average is missing more than 4,000 caregivers per year due to illness and early retirement.

An improvement in the work situation and organization could reduce the number of sick days and thus counteract the shortage of nursing staff, it said.

For the care report, Barmer evaluated the data of its insured persons.

This took ten percent of the entire population of the Free State into account.
