Berlin / Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - The former Hessian Minister for Women Barbara Stolterfoht is dead. According to the SPD district of Hessen-Nord and the Hessian State Chancellery, Stolterfoht died in Berlin at the age of 80.
"Barbara Stolterfoht was a committed politician who, in the long years of her career, has been committed to a balanced social policy with great motivation," said Hesse's Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU).
“She always kept her eyes on those who were often overlooked in the public eye.
She has never lost sight of the goal of a more social, fairer society. "
Minister of Social Affairs Kai Klose (Greens) added that Barbara Stolterfoht, as the Hessian Minister for Women, Labor and Social Order, had always been particularly committed to equality and gender equality.
Born in 1940 in Dux (Sudetenland) in what is now the Czech Republic, Stolterfoht had been a member of the SPD since 1965.
From 1995 to 1999 she was in the government of the then Hessian Prime Minister Hans Eichel (SPD) Minister for Women, Labor and Social Affairs.
As early as 1984 Eichel, at that time still Lord Mayor of Kassel, appointed Stolterfoht as the first women's representative of a German municipality.
Before her appointment as minister, she was, among other things, director of the State Welfare Association of Hesse and then - from 2000 to 2008 - Chairwoman of the German Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband as well as President of the Federal Association of Independent Welfare Care.
In 2012 Stolterfoht was awarded the Wilhelm Leuschner Medal.
It has been used since 1965 to honor people who have exemplified democracy, freedom and social justice.
