This is a first since 2016: Apple reclaimed the top spot in smartphone sales in 2020. The company sold 80 million iPhones in the fourth quarter, according to a study by analysis firm Gartner published on Monday, reports Lemon Press.

Apple's smartphone sales grew 3.3% in 2020. Xiaomi, with 15.7% more sales, is the only other brand to show an increase.

The year was difficult for other manufacturers, whether it was Samsung (-14.6%), Huawei (-24.1%) or Oppo (-5.8%).

Overall, smartphone sales fell 12.5% over the year.

5G at the heart of sales

IPhone sales were boosted by the release of the iPhone 12 and its various versions.

According to experts, its compatibility with 5G technology has greatly appealed to the public.

Apple was already working on 6G.

The Cupertino company recently announced that it was looking for specialized engineers to develop this technology in-house.

The iPhone 12 Mini, less expensive than its big brother, has also won over customers.

The presence of moderately priced smartphones in the market is, according to experts, "a decisive factor for customers to upgrade their phones."

We already know that the range of iPhone 13 in preparation at Apple will also include a Mini model at a reduced price.
