According to reports, the highway in Niigata Prefecture was affected by heavy snow, and many vehicles were trapped for two days starting on the 16th.
As the snow removal work continued, on the morning of the 18th, the trapped vehicles in the lane towards Niigata were rescued first, but hundreds of vehicles in the lane towards Tokyo were still trapped.
It was not until 4 o'clock in the morning on the 19th that relevant units completely cleared the trapped vehicles.

According to the report, the East Japan Expressway Company originally expected to resume two-way traffic on the morning of the 19th. However, due to the continued impact of the strong cold air mass and heavy snow, it is still unknown when this section of the road will resume normal traffic.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said that due to the increased winter pressure caused by the influx of strong cold air masses, heavy snow will continue in the areas on the Hokkaido and Sea of Japan side. Snow will also increase in the mountainous areas of Niigata and Gunma prefectures, and snow cover is expected to continue to increase.
