Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Andre Onana has been suspended for one year by UEFA for an anti-doping rule violation, the club announced on its website on Friday.
"The suspension is effective from today and applies to all football activities, national and international", it is specified in the press release.
A simple mistake?
Traces of furosemide, a diuretic, were found in the urine of the 24-year-old Cameroonian international on October 30, during an unannounced check-up.
The player and the club will appeal the sanction to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Ajax plead an error.
On the morning of October 30, Onana was ill and wanted to take a medicine that had been prescribed to her before.
But he would have accidentally ingested his wife's drugs, assures the club.
“We are obviously defending clean sport,” commented general manager Edwin van der Sar.
It's a terrible setback, for André himself, but certainly also for us as a club.
We were hoping for a conditional suspension or much shorter than these twelve months, because this medication was not intended to improve his performance.
