When firefighters arrived at the scene on Monday evening shortly after 11:20 p.m., 450 ewes were already dead.
These sheep perished asphyxiated during the fire in their 700 square meter sheepfold located at a place called Gabioles, in Viane.
This village of about 530 inhabitants is located in the south-east of the Tarn, not far from the Aveyron.
The emergency services deployed two fire-fighting vans, two water-carrying vehicles, two all-purpose vehicles and an aerial ladder.
A firefighter nurse and an ambulance were also sent to the scene, while three nozzles were needed to control a disaster that could be of accidental origin.
