Neukieritzsch (dpa / sn) - A 345-ton lignite excavator operated by the Mibrag energy company crossed federal highway 176 between Groitzsch and Neukieritzsch (Leipzig district) on Saturday morning.

The company announced that the 12.5 meter high, 43 meter long and 12 meter wide excavator will be used in the Peres mining field in future.

Over 100 onlookers watched.

The excavator was not on the move quickly: According to Mibrag, it can do three to six meters per minute.

The excavator had to travel around 7.5 kilometers from its old site in the Schleenhain mining field to the new site.

During the crossing, the main road between Groitzsch and Neukieritzsch had to be closed.
