Cologne (dpa / lnw) - The police stopped an 86-year-old wrong-way driver on Autobahn 4 near Cologne.

As the police announced, the man had driven around 15 kilometers in the wrong direction on Friday night before officers could force him to stop by an artificially produced traffic jam near the Merzenich junction.

Other drivers had alerted the police about the odyssey of the man who had his 78-year-old wife with him as a passenger.

Thereupon police asked a truck driver to park his tractor-trailer across the lanes and secured this with a patrol car and flashing lights.

The driver's license and the small car of the 86-year-old were seized.

Relatives had reported the couple as missing to the Belgian police in the early evening.
