Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The number of newly registered cars in Baden-Württemberg fell significantly last year.

The State Statistical Office in Stuttgart reported on Tuesday a year-on-year decrease of 18.0 percent to just 425 503 vehicles.

Sales of new cars with conventional drive types fell by an above-average rate: the number of gasoline vehicles fell by 37.7 percent to 183,650 new registrations, the number of new diesels fell by 28.1 percent to 123,724.

In contrast, the number of new registrations of cars with alternative types of drive rose, especially pure electric cars - albeit from a low level in each case.

In the case of e-cars, there was an increase of 222 percent to 32,879 newly registered vehicles.

The number of new hybrid cars rose by 108 percent year-on-year to 83,359.
