Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Drinking up to alcohol poisoning: The "binge drinking" has increased among young people in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in recent years.

While the hospitals still admitted 347 children and young people with alcohol poisoning for inpatient treatment in 2015, the number rose annually, as the health insurance company DAK-Gesundheit announced on Monday, citing data from the State Statistical Office.

537 cases were reported in 2018.

More recent figures are not available.

It cannot yet be said what effect the corona lockdown had on drinking behavior last year, it said.

The DAK and Social Affairs Minister Stefanie Drese (SPD) started the annual poster competition “Bunt statt Blau” against binge drinking on Monday.

More information about the risks is needed, it said.

The competition is aimed nationwide at 12 to 17 year olds.

The organizers hope that the posters will deliver credible messages from their own age group.

Nationwide, according to the information, almost 20,500 children and young people with alcohol poisoning were taken to hospital in 2018.

"Every child and every young person with alcohol poisoning is one too many," said the head of the state representative of DAK health in MV, Sabine Hansen.

Minister of Social Affairs Stefanie Dreise (SPD) declared as patron of the competition in MV: "With the campaign" Colorful instead of blue "we want to make it clear again this year that it is not at all cool to drink unconscious."

The deadline for entries for the 2021 competition is April 30th.

Then the best posters would be awarded in all federal states, it was said.

In September, a jury will choose the national winners.
