Once again the general secretary of Podemos and Minister of Social Rights, Ione Belarra, has charged against the entrepreneurs who own supermarkets and has suggested the creation of public markets that allow "to face the oligopoly of food led by the capo Juan Roig" during a conference on strategic sectors a few days ago.

In this sense, the minister has accused supermarkets of "speculating" with the price of food and in a recent interview with El País has assured that, although she goes to Carrefour, she tries to make the purchase in La Garbancita Ecológica de Vallecas, Madrid. The latter is a cooperative of "responsible consumers and organic farmers", as explained by the website where prices are visibly higher than in Mercadona, the chain of Juan Roig whom the minister has publicly accused of being a "ruthless capitalist" for its prices.

The purchase of eggs, milk, oil, rice, bread and tomato costs almost 27 euros (26.95) in the store chosen by Belarra, while the same products are obtained for a total of 9.24 in Mercadona.

On the website of La Garbancita Ecológica, the half dozen eggs are sold for 2.60 euros and the dozen for 4.80 euros, while in Mercadona, six eggs cost 1.20 and 12 eggs, 2 euros.

The liter of semi-skimmed milk in the supermarket that the minister prefers costs 1.80 euros, on offer with an 18% discount, "by date of preferential consumption," explains the website. The regular price is 2.20 euros as well as the liter of whole milk. In the Spanish store of reference the cheapest liter of semi-skimmed milk is for 0.90 euro cents and the whole, for 0.91 cents per liter.

As for rice, the online offer is poor, with only four varieties, the cheapest is the "Brown Red Rice of 500 grams" for 3.90 euros, while white rice is the most expensive option, at 4.90 euros per kilo. In Mercadona, on the other hand, the price of the cheapest white rice is 1.30 euros per kilo and that of brown rice is 1.70 per kilo.

The only option to buy sunflower oil costs 12.25 euros for two liters of "extra virgin sunflower oil", as the website explains. On the other hand, in the Roig site, sunflower oil "refined 0.2º" also costs 1.85 per liter, for two liters the consumer should pay 3.70 euros, 8.55 euros less than in the reference warehouse of Belarra.

To prepare a bread with tomato, the cheapest bar is "whole wheat bread and rye for 370 grams" and has a value of 2.44 euros and to complete the dish, the kilo of tomatoes "greenhouse pear", for 3.96 euros. The same purchase in Mercadona can be made for less than 5 euros. The 100% whole wheat bread of 350 grams, as specified by the Roig site, has a value of 1.63 and the kilo of pear tomatoes, 2.39. Although these elections are not the cheapest because you can find white bread loaves for 250 grams at 0.48 cents or threeloaves of bread for 750 grams at 1.15 euros. As for the second, the kilo of tomato for salad costs 2.25.

In this comparison of only five basic products, the purchase is 65.71% more expensive than in the Mercadona.
