BEIJING, April 4 -- "Low-carbon development of cities is the key to achieving carbon neutrality." Yang Baojun, chief economist of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and chairman of the China Planning Society, said at a forum a few days ago that different spatial scales have different carbon reduction priorities, and the urban block level is a spatial unit that can better play the role of systemic carbon reduction.

A number of experts supported sustainable urban development and park city construction at the recently held "3rd Park City Forum and 6th International High-level Forum on Sustainable Urban Development".

Data shows that although less than 2% of the surface area of urban areas around the world, they consume nearly 80% of energy and produce more than 60% of carbon emissions.

"In the face of serious climate challenges, cities have an important role to play in addressing climate change." Speaking at the forum, Leung Jinhui, Executive Director of the World Economic Forum and Global Director of the Centre for Nature and Climate, said that cities can be built into perfect testing grounds for climate solutions to pilot and scale, with key tasks including building greening, energy-saving renovation of existing buildings, green infrastructure, and innovative urban transportation.

More than half of the world's population today lives in cities, and this proportion will continue to increase, with 2025% expected to live in cities by 75. Leung said that urban development has increased the threat to people, assets, economies and urban ecosystems. 80% of the world's cities are threatened by climate-related events, and about 44% of global GDP is threatened with losses due to these natural disasters.

Liang Jinhui believes that at present, it is very important to strive to transform existing buildings and do energy-saving and emission-reduction services to improve energy efficiency; It is necessary to build green infrastructure and strengthen the design protection and biodiversity of smart cities; At the same time, urban mobility needs to be innovated to make urban mobility more sustainable, convenient and inclusive.

Based on the sustainable development of cities, Gao Guoli, director of the China Center for Urban and Small Town Reform and Development, said at the forum that the park city that practices the new development concept is to optimize and improve the planning and construction, camp concept and governance methods of traditional cities in an all-round way, and create a green, safe, circular and efficient urban sustainable operation system.

Gao Guoli said that the construction of park cities should fully conform to the people's yearning for a better life, so the logical starting point and fundamental destination of the entire park city construction are reflected in the spatial layout, social governance, environmental construction, ecological construction and the selection of related supporting industries.

Guo Renzhong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, and dean of the Smart City Research Institute of Shenzhen University, proposed that in the process of promoting sustainable smart city construction, we should grasp four principles: first, scientific planning, foundation first, smart city construction planning and infrastructure layout; The second is to grasp the key, the government first, and focus on promoting the construction of digital government; The third is to face the demand, focus first, based on the characteristics of the city, and promote the construction of smart scenes; Fourth, open up and explore, take the lead in the market, and attach importance to giving play to the role of the market.

The 2022rd Park City Forum and the <>th International High-level Forum on Sustainable Urban Development were held in Tianfu New District, Sichuan, focusing on the proposition of sustainable urban development, and successively released reports and research results such as "Future City Consultant Outlook", "Case Study of Low-carbon City Development Model" and "Park City Index <>", presenting valuable experience on the road of promoting sustainable urban development.
