China News Network Tianjin, April 4 Question: Tianjin Port: A "green journey" of a Chinese port

China News Network reporter Wang Junyan

"It can be said that 'blue collar' becomes 'white collar'." As a young "old Tianjin port man", Yuan Bo, a remote control driver of Tianjin Port Second Container Company, said with emotion that his working environment has undergone earth-shaking changes - in the past, he needed to climb tens of meters high, work in a small operation room to control the shore bridge operation, and endure the risks of noise, dust and high-altitude work; Now, the air at the terminal is fresh, not only the ecological environment has become better, but also the work is much easier in the intelligent control center of the intelligent container terminal "remote control".

Industry, buildings and transportation are the three key areas that generate carbon emissions. In China, the transportation sector accounts for about 10% of total carbon emissions. According to the paper by the Water Transport Research Institute of the Ministry of Transport, as a transshipment node in the global supply chain, port greenhouse gas emissions account for about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Tianjin Port Group released data on April 4: the container throughput in the first quarter of this year was 10.504 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 7.9%, setting a record high in the first quarter. Container throughput ranks eighth in the world, and Tianjin Port is also a "big carbon emitter". In recent years, while container throughput has increased year after year, the carbon emission level of Tianjin Port has steadily declined. Where is the mystery? The reporter recently visited Tianjin Port to understand the construction process of this green port in northern China.

Energy transition in the "Colorful Terminal"

On April 4, with the slow berthing of the "Hyundai Copenhagen" ship, Tianjin Port officially opened the first new direct route to Europe this year - "Hanxin Shipping FE6" route.

"Coming here, it feels different from other terminals, and the automated rail bridges and quay bridges painted with colorful elements are eye-catching." At the maiden voyage ceremony, Li Juming, chairman of Hanxin Shipping China, said that the choice of the new route to open in Tianjin Port is not only due to the vast market in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the efficient operation of Tianjin Port, but also the construction of a green port.

The "colorful terminal" mentioned by Li Zhuming refers to the intelligent container terminal in Section C of the Beijiang Port Area of Tianjin Port. It has a "domineering" title - the world's first "smart zero-carbon" terminal. Since the terminal was put into operation in October 2021, it has received widespread attention from the industry.

The reporter recently visited and saw that the intelligent horizontal transportation robot carried the container in an orderly manner, the color yard bridge was loading and unloading operations, and two "large windmills" not far away slowly rotated, providing "green power" for the terminal... The job site is quiet and orderly, full of futuristic technology.

In the view of Wang Bao, secretary of the Party Committee of Tianjin Port Electric Power Company, the "good-looking" colorful terminal has also achieved "connotation", mainly relying on the energy transformation implemented by Tianjin Port on both sides of energy supply and consumption.

According to the White Paper on Port Carbon Neutrality Practice, the carbon emission sources of the port industry mainly come from the fuel and electricity consumed by loading and unloading production, auxiliary production and ancillary production. The path to achieve carbon neutrality in ports is mainly through renewable energy substitution, energy efficiency improvement and electrification level, carbon offset and other related measures, to promote the formation of "low-carbon energy supply + electrification of energy consumption" on the supply and demand side of port energy.

"On the energy supply side, the terminal generates electricity through multiple wind turbines and the photovoltaic power station with the largest single installed capacity of the port in the country, and the annual energy consumption of the terminal has achieved 2021% clean energy and 12% self-sufficiency." Chen Ye, equipment manager of the Kexin Facilities Department of Tianjin Port Group, introduced that since the successful grid generation of the terminal's smart green energy system on December 15, 4370, the cumulative power generation has reached <>.<> million kWh as of press time.

Chen Yanping, deputy director of the facilities department of Tianjin Port Group, revealed to reporters that Tianjin Port will accelerate the construction of new energy projects, and achieve 100% clean energy supply with the three-step strategy of "zero-carbon terminal", "zero-carbon port area" and "zero-carbon port", and build Tianjin Port into a demonstration port for carbon peak and carbon neutrality in China's port industry.

On the energy consumption side, the Port of Tianjin has upgraded both fixed and mobile equipment. The "oil to electricity" of the field bridge, intelligent horizontal transportation robots, electric trucks, and new energy truck wheels are "on the job", gradually reducing the proportion of traditional fuel machinery or vehicles.

Ports "green" often rely on "getting smarter". In the Tianjin Port Intelligent Power Control Center, all kinds of data are intuitively displayed on the large screen of the "integrated energy service platform": from the annual comprehensive energy consumption data, the annual power generation of new energy, to the energy consumption of a light pole and a rail bridge... It changes the time-consuming and laborious traditional manual input, automatic collection, automatic analysis, and clear and clear display. "When you know where your energy is consumed, you know where you can do better." Wang Bao said that these provide a basic data reference for Tianjin Port's "dual carbon" plan.

The State Council's Action Plan for Peaking Carbon Emissions before 2030 proposes to "further promote the use of shore power by ships at ports". The relevant person in charge of Tianjin Port Group introduced that the promotion and use of shore-based power supply (referred to as shore power) has also accelerated in Tianjin Port. At present, on the basis of exceeding the shore power construction tasks required by the Ministry of Communications, Tianjin Port continues to promote the construction of shore power facilities, and the port has achieved full coverage of shore power in production berths, and 100% shore power use for ships with use conditions.

According to relevant statistics, compared with low-sulfur oil, the reduction rate of sulfur oxides is 81.4%-87.9%, the reduction rate of nitrogen oxides is 97.4%-98.3%, and the reduction rate of fine particulate matter is 77.1%-85.1%.

Ore terminal "refreshed"

In spring, the operation on the special line of Tianjin Port Nanjiang Ore Railway is busy. Open containers bearing the words "China Railway" are loaded with iron ore and will be sent by rail to Handan, Hebei Province, and then distributed to nearby steel mills.

The reporter drove into the Tianjin Port Yuanhang International Ore Terminal, the sweeper was cleaning the residue after receiving and unloading the ore, and the ground after cleaning only had a faint red residue, and the "dusty" operation scene of the traditional ore terminal could not be seen.

"In the past, after entering and leaving the ore dock, tires and even clothes would be dyed, and people rarely wore white clothes when they entered the site to work." Zhang Xu, deputy manager of the production business department of Tianjin Port Yuanhang International Ore Terminal, sighed that through "road to rail" and "scattered reform", the ore terminal has been "renewed".

"Road-to-rail" and "loose reform" refer to the transformation of bulk cargo from road transportation to railway transportation, and from bulk cargo transportation to container transportation, thereby reducing environmental pollution and cargo loss in the operation link.

In 2018, the General Office of the State Council issued the Three-Year Action Plan for Promoting Transportation Restructuring (2018-2020), which requires that "in principle, bulk goods such as ore and coke from major coastal ports and Tangshan Port and Huanghua Port should be mainly transported by rail or waterway".

Calculate the "environmental account" of "road-to-rail": According to statistics, if road transportation is changed to railway transportation, every 1 million tons of goods transported 1 km can reduce about 7500,80 tons of carbon dioxide, 4 tons of nitrogen oxides and 500 tons of particulate matter. However, from an economic point of view, after adding loading and unloading costs, the cost of short-distance transportation within <> kilometers of railway transportation is not lower than that of roads.

How to make "railway" more attractive to customers? "Scatter set" is an important part.

"The container has strong sealing, and there will be no leakage during transportation, which reduces the loss of cargo owners." Zhang Xu introduced the operation process to reporters: the open container direct loading process is to transport the open container to the freight yard through a flatbed truck, use the ultra-long arm loader to load the ore and transport it back to the railway line, and then lift the container directly onto the train through the reach stacker, in the process will not cause cargo loss due to secondary reverse transportation, increase environmental protection work pressure, "At present, the accurate loading rate and full load rate have reached more than 99.8%, and this process has been highly recognized by customers." ”

Tianjin Port Yuanhang International Ore Terminal is mainly engaged in the bulk cargo receiving and unloading business of iron ore, nonferrous ore, coal, coke and other bulk cargoes, and the spread of dust sources in coal, ore storage and loading and unloading constitutes an important source of dust pollution in the port. Zhang Xu introduced that after "road to rail" and "scatter reform", the ground of the ore terminal has become cleaner and the dust has been reduced, "In addition, we have widely used environmentally friendly dust removal fog machines, sprinkler trucks, sweepers, etc. to carry out dust suppression and dust removal operations before and after loading and in the process of pouring, and the air quality has been greatly improved." ”

Wang Zhili, environmental protection manager of the safety and environmental protection department of Tianjin Port Group, said that at present, the proportion of clean transportation of iron ore in Tianjin Port has reached 65%, an increase of 2018.25 percentage points over 4, ranking in the forefront of ports in the country.

The construction of green ports is facing new challenges

"The port should be a new pioneer of Chinese-style modernization." Professor Wang Junfeng, director and professor of the Circular Economy and Low-carbon Development Research Center of Nankai University, introduced that the report of the 20th National Congress put forward "Chinese-style modernization" and put forward the green and low-carbon transformation requirements of "promoting green development and promoting harmonious coexistence between man and nature", which also put forward new requirements for the future development of the port.

"In the current global green port construction, the establishment of a more systematic and effective zero-carbon port new energy and power system, improving the carbon reduction level of the port, and improving the stability and safety of port electricity and energy consumption have become new challenges for future port construction." Wang Junfeng believes that for the construction of China's green ports, several new challenges need to be paid attention to: how to establish and promote a high-standard, safe and stable port energy and power system needs to be paid great attention; How to effectively connect the path of port carbon reduction and ship carbon reduction requires innovation; How to give full play to the advantages of ports to support the green and low-carbon economy of urban agglomerations such as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and build advantageous green and low-carbon industries requires attention to top-level design; How to innovate the synergy path and mechanism of carbon reduction and pollution reduction needs in-depth research.

Wang Junfeng said that the integration of renewable energy, electrification and zero carbon into the port's new energy system has become a new trend. "R&D and application of energy-saving and low-carbon technologies and equipment, hydrogen-powered automated rail cranes; Hydrogen trucks, demonstration applications of trucks, empty container stackers, reach stackers, forklifts and other electric port machinery in various ports; Layout of green energy power generation technologies such as wind power and photovoltaics, and construction of green and intelligent management and control platforms for ports. ”

"The port will become the main force of the city's green and low-carbon economic development." Wang Junfeng believes that the future development of the port area will also be deeply integrated with the free trade zone, comprehensive insurance zone and new urban area to promote the rapid development of green and low-carbon industries and green and low-carbon economy.
