Iran: Saudi delegation received in Tehran

A Saudi delegation arrived in Tehran on Saturday, April 8, for the "implementation of the tripartite agreement" of March 10 between the two heavyweights of the region and China for the restoration of relations between the two countries after seven years of rupture.

The visit of the Saudi delegation comes two days after the historic meeting between the Iranian and Saudi foreign ministers in Beijing. The two ministers affirmed that their country was committed to continuing their rapprochement and starting economic and security cooperation.

Moreover, King Salman of Saudi Arabia invited Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to visit Riyadh for an official visit after the end of the month of Ramadan. This visit is expected to take place in late April or early May. Sunni Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, and Shiite Iran severed relations after protesters attacked the Saudi embassy in Tehran.

Impact

The normalization of relations between the two countries, in open conflict in Yemen, Syria and Lebanon, makes it possible to change the situation in the region. This climate of détente could have repercussions on several regional conflicts, including in Yemen, where the two countries support opposing camps. Riyadh has resumed talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and there is talk of a possible peace deal in Yemen between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthis.

This rapprochement between Riyadh and Tehran obviously displeases Israel and the United States, which has sought in recent years to isolate Iran.
