According to the second edition of the Global Chief Data Officer Survey released by international accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers on the 27th, the number of chief data officers appointed by the world's leading companies rose last year, and chief data officers can have a positive impact on financial performance. Currently, 27% of leading organizations have hired a Chief Data Officer.

PwC launched the Global Chief Data Officer Survey for the first time in 2021. The first survey revealed that there are only a handful of data officers with real impact within the organization. The landscape is changing in 2022, with the second edition of the survey showing that 27% of leading companies have hired a Chief Data Officer, who is already on the rise across industries and in much of the world.

Regionally, the report shows that the penetration of European companies (42%) exceeds that of North American companies (38%). But overall, half of the world's chief data officers work for North American companies, and the region still leads the list for the skills, capabilities and experience of chief data officers.

By industry, the number of chief data officers is increasing in every industry. The number of chief data officers in financial services remains the leader, with more than half of banks and insurance companies appointing chief data officers, accounting for 22% of the world's total number of chief data officers.

Xiaohu Shan, PwC China Managing Partner, said that as companies set up the position of chief data officer at an increasing pace, companies need to use different methods and skills to achieve large-scale and efficient data collection and utilization, so as to improve their own data maturity. It is believed that in the future, more and more enterprises will appoint chief data officers at the senior management level.

Bin Wan, Chief Data Officer, PwC China, said: "We believe it is important to have roles at the senior management level dedicated to strengthening the data foundation, which is one of the reasons why the number of Chief Data Officers in the member institutions of PwC's global network has doubled in the past two years. "Chief data officers should fully leverage their own value, focus on data innovation, drive enterprise growth, and do a good job in data management to ensure enterprise data security and operational efficiency.

The survey found that companies that appointed a chief data officer achieved relatively higher growth rates in revenue and profitability. PwC's analysis found that the positive role of the chief data officer is evident in three-quarters of industries: companies with a chief data officer appointed have revenue growth of at least 5% higher than those without similar roles, and even 25% in some industries, such as utilities, real estate and energy.

With the market-oriented reform of data elements, in recent years, many governments in China have successively issued policies and pilots related to chief data officers. Many governments in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, represented by Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, have established the position of Chief Data Officer; At the same time, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Beijing and other regions with developed digital economy enterprises have also issued corresponding policies to guide the construction of enterprise chief data officers.

The survey pointed out that foreign government chief data officers are more inclined to strengthen the authorized operation of public data, the public disclosure, processing and processing of data resources, and the development and utilization of data economic elements. The chief data officer of Chinese enterprises is more inclined to the construction of data management organizational structure and institutional system, from the perspective of data strategy, using data to empower enterprises, and forming a new "data elemental" working style and data thinking.

Yang Tongpeng, PwC China Digital and Technology Advisory Services Business Director, said that in the era of digital economy, data has become a strategic asset for enterprises. The construction of digital China and the reform of market-oriented allocation of data elements will accelerate the implementation of chief data officers of the Chinese government and enterprises. Chief data officers need to actively promote the process of data resourceization and data assetization, step on the accelerator, strengthen data-driven digital transformation and innovation, and promote the development of the data industry from the inside out. It is also necessary to step on the brakes, build a data security governance system to ensure security, and ensure the compliant and efficient circulation and application of data. (End)
