Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant was sacked on Sunday, March 26. He had proposed Saturday night the suspension of the reform of the judicial system which, in his eyes, presents clear and immediate dangers for the country. The head of government, Benjamin Netanyahu, clearly supports the right wing of his coalition.

The reactions of the Israeli opposition are very strong. The coalition is anti-Zionist, says Yair Lapid, the opposition leader. Benjamin Netanyahu is endangering the country, he adds. Netanyahu has turned his government into madhouses, another opposition leader proclaims.

The Israeli Prime Minister made his choice faster than expected. Less than 24 hours after Yoav Galant's call for dialogue and the suspension for a month of judicial reform, he dismissed his defense minister after a brief tête-à-tête between the two men.

In a statement, the head of the Israeli government said he had lost his confidence in Mr. Galant, who acted without consulting him while he was traveling abroad.

The far-right ruling coalition welcomes this decision. And the Knesset, Israel's parliament, will continue to vote on reform in the coming days. The ousted minister, who remains an MP, has not indicated whether he intends to oppose the project.
