The Danone group announced Wednesday "the end" of the famous bottles of sparkling water Badoit of red and green color. These will be replaced by transparent plastic models. The objective: to allow better recycling of these plastic bottles for food use, which was not possible until now.

The food group Danone announced Wednesday "the end" of Badoit sparkling water bottles in red and green, replaced by transparent plastic models that can be recycled for food use. "As of today, consumers will be able to find in the various points of sale transparent Badoit bottles that will allow better recyclability into new bottles," the statement said.

Better recycling

Danone indicates that 70,000 tons of coloured PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles are placed on the market each year in France by all players, and that their "recycling into new bottles is still difficult today".

"Until now, the coloured bottles of our Badoit brand went through specialised recycling channels and were necessarily intended for uses other than food. From now on, the material from each recycled Badoit bottle can be used to make new bottles if it is properly sorted," the group announces.

Danone's "goal is to offer 100% recyclable packaging"

This change "allows Danone to take another step towards its goal of offering 100% of its packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable for the French market. These initiatives aim more broadly to feed the recycled PET (rPET) sector and encourage to reduce the use of virgin plastic," the statement said.

Danone says it is "studying other solutions for a circular economy such as deposit for recycling or reuse".
