Eight major Japanese companies have invested in "Rapidus," which aims to domestically produce cutting-edge semiconductors. is expected to be formally announced.

Rapidus, which is invested by Toyota Motor Corporation, NTT, Sony Group, etc., aims to develop 2-nanometer advanced semiconductors, which are said to be essential for next-generation industries such as autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI), by 2027, four years from now. We aim to mass-produce

According to people involved, the company has decided to build a new factory in an industrial park in Chitose, Hokkaido.

President Atsuyoshi Koike is expected to visit Hokkaido on the 28th, meet with Governor Suzuki and others, and formally announce the construction of the new plant.

It seems that the company decided to move into the new location because there are automobile-related factories that are expected to supply semiconductors in the vicinity of the planned construction site, and because it has good access to New Chitose Airport.

The company is proceeding with the construction of the new factory with the aim of completing it by four years, and is considering expanding the final site area to 100 hectares.

Rapidus, which was established in November last year, has entered into a partnership with the American IT giant "IBM", which has technology to make the width of semiconductor circuits finer, and is proceeding with research and development.

Now that the construction site for the new factory has been decided, efforts toward mass production will proceed one step further.
