• Telecommunications Brussels takes the first step so that the 'Big Tech' pay a fee to finance the networks

José María Álvarez-Pallete considers it "fair and logical" that Brussels has taken, this Wednesday, the first step for the big technology companies to pay a fee to the operators for using their networks.

That is, that companies like

Google

,

Netflix

or

Meta

pay

Telefónica

, or also

Orange

or

Deutsche Telekom

, for making use of their infrastructures.

The CEO of the Spanish operator has thus celebrated the decision of the European Commission, which thus meets one of the main demands of the large operators.

Pallete has stressed that

the current regulation is obsolete

, since it was developed in the copper and 2G stage and when the world is currently in "artificial intelligence, quantum computing and 5G networks".

"We need a new regulation that distinguishes between operators that invest and those that do not invest," they have insisted from Telefónica, which this Wednesday presented its annual results.

In 2022, the company

obtained a 2022 net profit of 2,011 million

euros after raising its annual revenue reported for the first time since 2015, by 1.8%, to 39,993 million euros, according to Servimedia.

The 2,011 million profit is 75% lower than that of 2021 (8,137 million)

, in the absence of the capital gains of 11,000 million that the company achieved in that year from the sale of Telxius towers and the merger of O2 and Virgin in the United Kingdom Kingdom, among other operations.

The company has highlighted that the net profit is the result of "

revenue growth in all the markets

in which it operates and the efficiency in the management and control of costs".

Possible dividend increase

With these figures, Telefónica

has confirmed the distribution of a dividend of 0.30 cents

per share.

It will be made in cash and in two payments: one in December of this year and another in June 2024. Asked about the possibility that the results allow raising shareholder remuneration, Pallete has advanced a possible upward revision for next year.

"All the trends that we see is that the cash box allows more than 30 cents to be covered. At the end of the year we will update it and

if there is a risk it is of an upward trend

," said the CEO of Telefónica.

And on the progress of the action, Pallete has defined the negative evolution of the last years as a "journey in the market".

During the last 12 months, the Telefónica share has fallen by just over 8% and since before the pandemic it has accumulated a loss of almost 30%.

Now, at the gates of a new regulation and with the results presented, the CEO has stated that "

it is the right moment to change the trend

".

In this Wednesday's session, the market has welcomed the company's results with notable increases and the share is trading at 3.8 euros.
