According to the financial regulator, as of December 31, 2022, sovereign debt amounted to more than €2.762 trillion, which is €84 billion more than a year earlier.

At the same time, the historical maximum was reached in October, when the public debt exceeded €2.771 trillion.

As Massimiliano Dona, president of the National Union of Italian Consumers, noted, if the national debt was divided among all Italians, each citizen would be owed €46,635.
